The global TV market has experienced an interesting shift in the first half of 2025, according to the latest report by TrendForce, which reveals a landscape of mixed performances among top brands. The total TV shipments reached 92.5 million units, marking a modest 2% year-on-year growth, but the underlying dynamics reveal more about the challenges and opportunities within the industry.

Samsung, the global TV powerhouse, has remained steady, showing flat growth. However, the real excitement is happening elsewhere, particularly with brands like TCL and Hisense, which have outpaced the market with impressive gains.

TCL saw a remarkable 12.5% year-on-year increase in shipments, a clear indication that its aggressive push in emerging display technologies and strategic global positioning is paying off. Similarly, Hisense posted a solid 7.3% growth, outperforming the broader market and strengthening its foothold in key regions.

But what’s driving this growth? The answer seems to lie in policy shifts and a surge in demand for Mini LED technology. Both TCL and Hisense have capitalized on favorable government incentives and increased consumer interest in next-gen display technology. Mini LED TVs, offering better contrast, brightness, and energy efficiency compared to traditional LED models, have become a major focal point for these brands.

As a result, global shipments of Mini LED TVs are expected to surge by a staggering 67% this year, reaching 12.9 million units, with TCL, Hisense, and Xiaomi dominating this segment. The combined market share of these three brands in Mini LED TVs is projected to rise to an impressive 62%, indicating a dramatic shift in the display landscape.

TCL and Hisense Lead Growth in Global TV Shipments

On the flip side, LG Electronics (LGE) and Xiaomi have seen more modest performances. LGE, despite its legacy in OLED and premium offerings, reported a 1.1% decline in shipments, likely impacted by the increasing popularity of budget-friendly alternatives and Mini LED’s growing presence. Xiaomi, however, is holding steady with a 1.5% growth, benefiting from its strong push in both the mid-range and high-end markets.

According to TrendForce, concerns over tariff changes have triggered an early spike in consumer demand, especially in the U.S. This front-loaded buying has moved much of the expected second-half sales into the first half, which could make the latter part of 2025 more challenging for the market. The report also points out that high panel costs are likely to restrict brands from running extensive holiday season promotions.

Looking ahead, 2025 could prove to be a pivotal year for Mini LED TVs. As the technology matures and more brands invest in it, the market is on the verge of a major transformation. The industry’s heavyweights, particularly TCL, Hisense, and Xiaomi, are poised to benefit significantly from this shift, while Samsung and LG face increasing pressure to innovate or risk losing market share in a rapidly evolving landscape.

Samsung has launched four new Odyssey series gaming monitors at ChinaJoy 2025, incorporating advanced MNT display technology from TCL CSOT. The announcement marks a significant step in Samsung and TCL CSOT’s partnership, aiming to push the boundaries of esports-focused display performance.

TCL CSOT showcased three new display technologies tailored for different gaming genres: HVA Fast, HVA Black, and HFS Shoot. HVA Fast supports a 1ms response time and offers curved panels in sizes ranging from 34 to 57 inches with a 1000R curvature. HVA Black features a 5000:1 native contrast ratio and supports refresh rates up to 500Hz, offering high clarity and dynamic visuals. HFS Shoot targets FPS players with support for high resolution, high refresh rates, and autostereoscopic 3D switching without glasses.

Samsung’s new lineup includes the 27-inch UHD 165Hz Odyssey G90XF, the 40-inch WUHD 180Hz Odyssey G75F, the 37-inch UHD 165Hz Odyssey G75F, and the 27-inch UHD 180Hz Odyssey G70F Dual-Mode Gaming Monitor.

The Odyssey G90XF is Samsung’s first gaming monitor to feature glasses-free 3D. It uses light-field display (LFD) technology combined with an eye-tracking camera to produce real-time 3D visuals without any viewing angle restrictions. The display supports AI-powered 2D-to-3D video conversion and features 4K resolution, a 165Hz refresh rate, spatial audio, and environmental lighting effects. Samsung launched the G90XF in May at a price of 14,999 yuan ($2,080).

Samsung has filed a fresh lawsuit in a Texas federal court accusing Chinese smartphone maker TCL and its affiliates of infringing multiple OLED display patents. The suit also names two U.S.-based companies, Ultimate Eshop LLC and eTech Parts Plus LLC, which Samsung says are selling or importing replacement OLED displays that violate its patents.

In the filing, Samsung claims that TCL China Star Optoelectronics Technology Co. and Wuhan China Star Optoelectronics Semiconductor Display Technology Co. are producing OLED panels that infringe on three key patents: U.S. Patent No. 9,330,593, No. 7,414,599, and No. 11,594,578. These patents cover OLED pixel circuits and driving methods.

Samsung says it notified TCL of the alleged violations back in July 2022 but claims the company has continued to produce infringing displays. The complaint specifically targets OLED screens used in several TCL smartphones sold in the U.S., including the TCL 10 Pro, TCL 20 Pro 5G, TCL 30, TCL 30 5G, and TCL 30+.

Samsung TCL Lawsuit

The legal battle builds on a prior case at the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC), where the ITC ruled that Samsung’s patents were valid and found that certain companies, including eTech Parts Plus, had infringed them. TCL had attempted to intervene in the ITC case after replacement OLED panels it produced surfaced in the U.S. market.

Samsung is also leaning on a recent win at the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), which last year upheld the validity of two of the contested patents, bolstering the company’s legal position.

Samsung declined to comment on the latest lawsuit. TCL and the U.S.-based companies named in the suit have not yet responded to requests for comment.
